Mini Comic Day 2014

Full Mini Comic Day 2014

Went to a Mini Comic day in Ann Arbor with Lorene and the kids....
The task was to come up with a 8 page short story and sketch it out quickly in just a few hours.  I didn't make them stay for the entire time...just to help with the initial concepts....
Natalie had some ideas, but Ethan had a little trouble....so I sketched the sketching ...the process.
This is the result.  These comics are fun, but they are also making me think more about the whole writing process, plus the value of getting something done fast even if it is not "perfect".  I can't tell you how often this has helped in my day job...sketching not just how something looks, while in a meeting, but sketching the scene that puts product or ideas in context.  Plus its just fun....

Still trying to figure out more ways to engage the kids in the classroom...I go in next month for another session....keep sketching!

Mini Comics Day Inking

Staying up way to late tonight.  Watching "Bull Durham"and reflecting....anyway ..."Oh my goodness, we got ourselves a natural disaster here!"....

U of M comic day

Its been a while since posting.  Went down to Ann Arbor for a Comic Day and started a little comic with Natalie and Ethan...Here is a work in progress TBD....

Stay tuned for revisions and a final coming soon....

WET Paint

Just a simple study while waiting for my computer....my first draft is typical, and lacks any character...I am learning to soften up and be more fluid and exaggerate expressions more to convey emotions....
I really liked the simplified revision ....so did Natalie!

Sketches of my kids ...

Art Parent March 2014

Art Parent 2014 January

Art Parent
I went to visit the 2nd and 4th grade for "Art Parent" this month.  We started with a poster showing various places a character may live.  I asked the kids to pick a "place" from below and sketch the character that lives there and tell me why they feel this character belongs there.
We had mixed results ....some of my sketches done in class are below.  Some kids made a scene around the place and did not focus on the character.  But most seemed to like the idea of creating a creature to live in one of these environments.  The teachers may try to turn this into a writing exercise, which was an added benefit.  They let me experiment with different assignments,  I go in again at the end of Feb. so I need a follow up to this by then.  More later

Stewie and the kids in Minnesota

Spent the holidays in Minnesota this year.  Had a great time with brother Bob.
While his wife and kids were traveling far away,  my kids and "Stewie" played with
the dog, in the snow and with whatever we could find.  We did these
sketches every few days after seeing a poster on nephew Steven's bedroom wall.
The kids and I decided it would be fun for Stewie to play in the house with us.
Here are the sketches done at bedtime over the course of a couple weeks.

Winter Girl

This was an afternoon sketch.  No deep meaning, just playing with sketches and this came out.  I sketched her from a photo on "Deviant Art" great source for references.  I like the way the hair came out....
Stay warm...

Happy Snowmen

Here is the color version for tomorrow...wish me luck with the little people .....

Art Parent Day...hopefully...

Getting ready for Art Parent day with the 2nd graders.  Hoping to squeeze an hour in before the Christmas break.  Snowmen should be fun and easy to work with, no perspective, or complex shapes,  yet a lot of facial expressions.  We did robots in the past with the same ideas of simple forms and plenty of freedom to create what you want. Hope this works well...

Old Heros

Just playing with the idea of Batman and others in their 80's and 90's...don't know why, just thought it would be good fuel for sketching....

Santa is coming!

The kids were getting into the Christmas mood, wearing their Santa hats around the house.

Oscar the Puppet

Natalie got a new puppet for "Stop Motion Animation" today.  She is very excited to see if the new puppet will talk with Noddy, the visiting Elf on the shelf as Christmas gets near. I think they will get along just fine. Here was a bedtime sketch we did together....(well the kids were to slap happy to do much sketching so  it was mostly me...)
The puppet named "Oscar"

The bed time sketch....

Furby

Sketching Furby with my daughter today....funny little quick sketch.  Trying to show fur textures and shading techniques. using the side of the pencil with line work combinations.  Still trying to figure out how to introduce shading and light to kids.  Looking at proportions, shading and line-work and not sure how to bring the kids along on this.  Back in the class room in December or January and still need to pull together some quick handouts and examples .....more to come
